Fertile window

The fertile window is the roughly six days each cycle when conception is possible: the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day.

It exists because sperm can survive up to five days in the reproductive tract while the egg lives about a day.

Calendar estimates are useful for planning but are not reliable contraception, because ovulation timing can shift.
